Introduction to Cloud Computing

Computing

  • Involves managing, processing and communicating information.

Two types of Computing

  • Centralised Computing
  • Distributed Computing

Advantages

Disadvantages

Mainframe Computing

  • Sophisticated machines based on vacuum tube technology

Personal Computing

  • Smaller size machines
  • Designed for personal usage

Networked Computing

  • Computers interconnected using small networks
  • Eg. ARPANET

Extra Stuff

  • Mersenne Primes → Primes of form 2^n - 1 → Used in elliptical curves.
  • The GIMPS Project → Allowed users to share their CPU/GPU computation → Identified 52nd Mersenne prime.
  • SETI → Search for extra terrestrial existence → Analysis of radio waves → Users were able to contribute their CPU computation.
  • Grid Computing → distributed system model that connects multiple independent, often geographically dispersed computers over a network to act as a unified "virtual supercomputer" capable of tackling massive computational tasks
